Look at Me (Collage)

Hello everyone 🙂

This is a piece I made a few weeks back.  I had finished the collage itself but couldn’t settle on the words for it.  Then, after watching Grease one night with my nephew (his choice of movie – I wasn’t sure if it was appropriate or not for an eleven-year old, but then I remembered that is exactly the age I was when I first watched it all the way through) I kept getting the “Look at me, I’m Sandra Dee” song in my head.  Not the saucy slumber-party version that Rizzo sings, but the sad, navel-gazing one that plays when Sandy is watching the car race.  The bird-lady here seemed to be channeling that mood and feeling, so I went with it.

The original mirror had actually been cut from the lady’s hand, so I had to go searching through my cut-up books to find another one of the same size.  I got lucky.  That mirror looks like it belongs there – I don’t think you would know I had used a different one from another picture.  Small triumphs can make your day.  And those skinny little legs and toes were nerve-wracking to cut out and adhere too – they were pretty fragile, especially once they had glue on them.  But, she survived, intact, and ready for some self-appraisal and soul-searching.  As anyone would do, if they were a stork wearing a dress 🙂

Thank you for stopping by – hope you have a lovely week x

Never Mind the Rest (Collage)

A post-Easter bunny for you today, with a quote from Beatrix Potter.  This collage came together so quickly, with a minimum of fuss.  I panicked a bit, towards the end, thinking I was going to get all the words on.  But I managed to just fit them all in (I really need to get better at mapping these things out before I start them…).  I love the vintage bunny, and it was a change to work with the pink tones too.

Have a good day – thanks for stopping by 🙂

Don’t Settle (Collage)

I’ve gotta say… I am lovin’ the bricks on this collage.  They turned out really well (*pats self on back*) and just seemed to fit with the rest of the design.  The pantsuit (isn’t it fabulous?) came from a vintage seventies pattern I found in an op-shop.  I picked up a few for 50c each – I love old dressmaking patterns and their gorgeous illustrations.  And then I cut them up ha ha.

This Deer Lady went through several changes before I settled on this head for her – she was almost a camel at one stage.  I toyed with the idea of her being a rabbit and an ostrich momentarily too, but the deer head seemed most appropriate and ladylike.

It’s one of the first times I’ve used my own quotes, rather than stealing a well-known one from someone much wiser than myself.  But it also seemed to fit.  Sometimes you’ve just gotta go with what feels right, right?

Thank you for stopping by.  Hope your day is amazing 🙂

You are Awesome (Collage)

Hello everyone 🙂

Another little collage I made for a friend’s birthday a few weeks back.  She and I have bonded over shared ailments, social anxiety and lots of other issues that make us feel less than awesome.  We always support and reassure one another, even if it’s just by saying “Oh I know how you feel!”  We started telling each other we’re awesome, kind of as a joke, but it has become our thing to say now.

I wanted to make a little reminder for my friend that she is an awesome lady, even if I’m not around to tell her that,  so I made this 4″ x 4″collaged box canvas for her desk at work.  The crowned stoat could be symbolic for “fearless” or something, but it’s actually just the first image I pulled out of my collage file.  We’ll pretend it was chosen for its symbolism though, because that sounds better and makes me look smarter.

Hope you are having a great day.  Always remember you ARE awesome 🙂

Quietest and Most Constant (Collage)

Another day, another collage!  I actually made this one a few weeks ago but forgot to post it.  I really like the sentiment – books are constant friends and, for me, a house without books is just not a home.  Of course, being a librarian, I am surrounded by books all the time, so it is hard to imagine a life without them.  My house would probably be a lot less crowded though…but that’s another story!

The bird-lady in my collage has a lovely dress (from a Janet and Anne Grahame Johnstone book of prayers) and her head is from a vintage book of bird illustrations.  She’s a Eurasian Hoopoe.  And she’s pretty fabulous with her freaky-deaky feathers.  You can read more about Hoopoes HERE.  They’re quite delightful.

The quote is from Charles William Eliot

Thanks for dropping by 🙂

You Are Magic (Collage on Bread Board)

Just for something a little different…I used this mini bread board for a collage base, and it turned out pretty well.  Nice, flat surface to work on and the grain in the wood adds an extra bit of visual detail.  I’d been wanting to use the bunny (actually, I think it’s a hare…) on something and I think it’s just right for this project.  I had to add wings of course, and the crown comes from a book of fairy tales in my cutting-up box.  There’s now a princess looking a bit peeved because someone has pinched her head gear…

I’m giving myself a pat on the back for the straightest, non-wonky letter stamping I have ever done.  A pure fluke, but a happy fluke nonetheless.  I didn’t want to ruin the whole thing by doing bodgy lettering which, sadly, seems to be happening to me a lot lately.  I have lots of un-finished pieces because I am too scared to put the words on…

Hope you are having a non-wonky, non-bodgy, successful and happy weekend.
Thank you for stopping by x

Don’t Worry, Be Weird

A recurring theme for me lately – the concept of being weird or not fitting in or just embracing the kooky little dork that you are…

I’d been wanting to use the bicycle image for ages, but of course had to modify it slightly.  Then it took forever to find just the right kind of bird head to fit in with the image (you can’t just plonk any old bird head on a woman’s body, you know!).

The squirrel was initially supposed to go on top of the bird lady’s hat, but I ran out of room at the top of the picture….

…so he has to ride up front, being careful not to let his lovely tail droop into the spokes of the wheel…(ouch!)…
