Cardmaking

Hello everyone.  I have been very slack about posting lately and I apologise.  No real excuse – just life getting in the way.  Plus I am trying not to use my computer too much at home, just to give my eyeballs a break from screen-time.  Which means I have about eight thousand emails waiting for me right now.  There’s probably bills in there.  Oh well.  I will get to them soon enough, possibly when they turn my power off or cut my water supply.

I have been crafting when I can.  The weekends go by so quickly and the evenings after work just don’t seem to be the right time for me to get my art on.  I am tired and squinty and headachey.  And lazy, to be honest.  So I try and utilise my weekends, which isn’t always easy when you have other commitments to take care of.  I don’t include housework in that.  I think we all know that is very much at the bottom of my “to do” list!

I haven’t made any cards for AGES.  Last weekend I decided to make a few, just to get me over my crappy-collage-why-is-nothing-working-phase.  Working on cards means no base-coating or varnishing or anything that takes too much prep.  And working to a nice small scale always feels right to me – I’m not very good at larger projects.  Even most of my collages are less than 8″ x 8″.  Cards are a prefect size.

These are the three I made one afternoon and I am reasonably happy with them.  Especially the octopus (even if cutting out all those legs was a bit migraine-inducing!).

More of an exercise in “just getting on with it” than an attempt at perfection, I just wanted to makes some quick little pieces that would help me get back into a crafting groove.  Sometimes you need to change things up a little.

Hope you are all having a happy, creative day.

Thank you for stopping by x

Lost and Found (Collage)

Hello everyone and Happy Hump Day!  Aren’t the weeks just flying by?  One minute I am whinging about it being Monday, and the next thing I know we’re heading towards the weekend again.  It’s a sure sign of getting older – the time slipping by at a rapid pace.

This collage was made using a wooden board from a puzzle.  I bought some little wooden puzzles from an op-shop a few weeks ago – they were brand new and still in their plastic wrapping.  The puzzle pieces were held in place by the recessed wooden board, and I thought it would make a great “framed” collage piece.

So, I painted the board with black gesso on all sides and tried in vain to remove the label on it that showed the image of the finished puzzle.  Gah!  Non-removable stickers and labels are the bane of my crafting existence.  This one WOULD NOT COME OFF.  I didn’t dare to use any kind of  label remover, for fear it would leave an oily residue.  So, what to do?  Desperate times call for desperate measures so, rummaging through my “bits and bobs” box, I found a child’s wooden block that was the perfect size to cover the label.  It was painted black and stenciled with the same brick design as the rest of the piece.  after completing the collage, I carefully glued the block to the front, over the label, and made sure it was level with the edge of the board, so the board would stand up on its own.

I think it worked out pretty well.  The block at the front almost looks like a bit of garden wall, or maybe the top of a chimney, and having the whole piece stand up for display is pretty neat too.  I wasn’t sure what words, if any, would suit the theme and so, stuck for ideas, I just used the words “Lost and Found”.  I added the little wonky sixpence to  tie in with the theme (well, vaguely…) and it was all done.

I will be making more of these pieces, as I bought several of the puzzle sets.  It’s great to upcycle things, and the puzzles themselves I have re-thrifted, so they weren’t wasted.

Hope you are all having a good week – thank you for stopping by 🙂

Being Normal (Collage)

Hello, everyone!

I have to say I am quite pleased with this collage.  That doesn’t happen very often (I have awesome self-esteem and confidence in myself) so I will grab those good feelings whenever they occur!  This little bird-lady is so cheerful and silly and looks like she knows exactly how fabulous she is.  She doesn’t care that she is a bit different and has no desire to fit in with everyone else, so she spends her time doing exactly what she feels like, and makes the world a happier place because of it.  Which is probably how we should all strive to be.

To all those who wear their weird crown proudly, and are living an authentic life (and possibly doing it in a fabulous polka dot dress whilst attempting the splits),  I salute you!

Thank you, as always for stopping by

Dream Queen

I managed to do a few paintings / collages on the weekend, after my crafting ban of the prior two weeks.  It was actually good to have a break from it, to clear up a bit (a bit…) and also refresh my brain and start on something different.  I am trying desperately to get better at painting – my Mum and brother are brilliant but I, sadly, am not – and find a style that sits comfortably with me and my abilities (or lack thereof).  I’m also trying to just DO, rather than over-thinking things.

So, I started this painting, which turned out to be a mixed-media piece in the end with the addition of some collaged “extras” and, although she’s not perfect, I’m fairly pleased with her.  I’m trying so hard to not judge my work too harshly, because it hinders the process and makes me have unnecessary tantrums.

This lady got a nice lace collar….

IMG_1613

…and a bit of a rotund face.  A bit too round for my liking….

IMG_1614

…so I trimmed it down a bit, so she’s got a more angular look…and she got a crown too, and some wings (naturally)…

IMG_1616

…I added a stamped border and stamped “dream” letters, anddid a bit of outlining to highlight some details.

IMG_1618

…and she’s done 🙂

I’m still not very good at faces (and I kinda wish I hadn’t made her face less round now), but I am hoping the more I do, the better I will hopefully get!  My other plan was to give up entirely and just paint/draw all my people facing away from me, thus negating the need for faces at all!  Hooray!  But that’s cheating, right?

Thank you for dropping by and having a look at my funny, imperfect art 🙂

Brave Day (Collage)

Hello everyone.  Another work week begins and I would much rather be at home in the warm, in my craft room, making a mess and creating some new “art”.  I say “art” (in quotation marks) because I’m not yet ready to call what I do Art.  Which is weird, because I follow lots of other artists who make collages and mixed-media pieces and I call their work Art.  But then, I wouldn’t be me if I wasn’t a bit insecure about everything I do.  And that’s why you love me, right?  Right? *looks insecure and nervous*

This weekend I played hermit and stayed at home and crafted.  It was lovely.
I made quite a few pieces, one after the other, which was so satisfying – normally I faff about for ages on one thing, not even finishing it, and getting very frustrated at my lack of creative oomph (ie talent).  But this weekend I was on a bit of a roll.  If something wasn’t working, I moved on to the next idea, and tried not to get bogged down in any piece that refused to cooperate. Sometimes you just need to put things aside and start fresh on something else so your brain has time to fire up again.  This also stops you from swearing too much or throwing things in the bin (or at the wall, or down the stairs) in anger and disgust.

So, this piece came together relatively easily and with minimal crankiness on my part.  I have used this little bird often, on other projects, and he is a bit of a muse for me.  He just always works.  Maybe it’s because he’s blue (my favourite colour), or because he looks so darn sensible and down-to-earth.  He has a calming influence on me, bless him.  I do curse a bit whilst cutting out those tiny little toes and claws, but he is otherwise an easy guy to work with and never fails me.

He needed a crown or, rather, deserved a crown, so I added a fetching royal number (which I might add some bling to later…) and I think the red adds a nice contrast and detail.  It took me forever to decide on a word or quote – I have so many books that I cut up for text, but it is hard to find exactly the right phrase or word in the right sized font. I have HEAPS already pre-cut, but do I ever find one that is just right?  No, I do not.  However, I felt that “‘Tis a Brave Day” suited this little fellow, and hoped it would encourage me to be a bit more courageous myself.  Maybe.  Basically, I just needed some words and these ones fit 🙂

Anyway, I was pleased with him.  It was a good start to a crafty weekend because it encouraged me to do more and keep up the momentum.  I am enjoying working on canvases instead of cards for change and finding the simple, one-dimensional form (rather than many layers and embellishments as on a card) to be a lot less labour-intensive and time-consuming.  There is great joy in not having to trawl through boxes of ribbon, lace and buttons in order to finish something.

So, ’tis a brave day indeed.  Less is more.  More or less 🙂

Thank you for dropping by x

Genuine (Art)icle

A crafting weekend is a good weekend.  Unless everything you try to make fails badly.  I didn’t have the most creatively successful weekend over the last couple of days.  I made a few really dodgy cards (probably won’t show you those) and a couple of OK ones.  This ones comes under the OK heading, I think.

I wanted to do a quirky card.  One that would make someone smile.  Something with a bird image (naturally) and probably a hat or a crown (goes without saying).  I also wanted to go with a different colour scheme to the ones I would normally use.  I have SO MUCH paper and I use SO LITTLE of it.  I just always go for the same colours and patterns/themes.  So, I stepped out of my comfort zone here.

I’m happy with this one.  Cutting out the tiny wee feet drove me batty but I succeeded in not snipping any toes off, so that’s a good thing.  Her crown is a little wonky but that’s ok.  None of us are perfect 🙂

Frosty & the Egghead

Frosty & the Egghead

Had a lovely day at Mum’s today, crafting and chatting.  Endless cups of tea, smooches with Alexander the Magnificent (our remaining beloved and very spoilt cat – he’s 16 now and looking great for his age) and lots of silliness (why is it no one understands me like my Mum?).

Mum’s been working on this little snowman for about two years.  Seriously.  She started his head ages ago and then he kept getting put away again and never finished.  She was determined to complete him today but secretly I think she will probably keep editing and adding to him over the next couple of days. I left it a bit late to take photos today, as always, so it’s not the best shot of the little guy.  He looks better in person though…

IMG_3209

I faffed about making cards and some pendants.  I was having a bad-back-and-neck day so I was feeling not so great which makes me, in turn, not so good at being creative.  All I want to do is curl up in a big ball of painkillers and a hundred heat packs.  But life goes on and so must the creative muse.  I hate wasting a day so even if I’m in pain (which I have been, a lot this weekend) I try to make something.

I’m having a bit of an egg/wings/crowns moment currently, hence the following offerings (again, apologies for crappy photos – they’re blurry and at a weird angle…)…

IMG_3227

Wasn’t at all happy with this one but it was glued on and about as good as it was going to get so I gave up…

I don’t know how “masculine” this one actually is…

Was a bit concerned about the “new skin” wording…then I figured that new skin and rebirth and all that kinda goes with butterflies and metamorphosis so I let it go…

Now it’s time for dinner and ironing (ugh) and possibly a very hot shower (my back, oh my aching, stupid back!) and ignoring all the boxes of crafting stuff I brought home with me and piled up on the floor.  I had a nice afternoon, let’s not spoilt it with housework and tidying up!  Hope you’ve all had a lovely weekend 🙂
