Frosty Greetings

Following on from my previous post, I am on a bit of a snowman vibe at the moment.  I used to draw this particular little guy about 15-20 years ago, and had forgotten all about him.  I don’t know why, because he is so quick and easy to draw and enables me to get lots of cards done in a short amount of time.  Better still, he is of course white so I don’t have to do lots of colouring!  Just black for his hat, a bit of red or blue for his scarf and a tiny swipe of cool grey (Oh I do love my Copic Markers!) for some shadowing, and I’m done.  I’ve tried him with and without a carrot nose – I prefer him without – and he doesn’t even have the customary black-dotted mouth (I’ve always found them a bit creepy).

A quick stamped sentiment and a card is done and dusted in no time.  And I enjoy doing them.  He makes me smile.  I think I also like the fact that he is all mine – my design and idea (although, how hard was it to come up with a snowman?). He’s not exactly a very Australian concept though – perhaps I should try him with a bush hat (the kind with corks hanging from it) and some gum leaves sticking out of it.  Actually, that’s an idea…

Thanks for stopping by 🙂

Happy ANZAC Day everyone 🙂

Forgot to include this card with my last post.  It was one I made very quickly at the end of my group crafting day.  My friend had bought an old Japanese book from an op-shop, with the thought of using the text on cards and other projects.  She shared the pages with us, and I created this card with some other Japenese-y papers I had luckily brought with me.  Actually, they were from years ago when I was on the Design Team for a scrapbooking store.  I hadn’t used these papers since then, but they went well with the text as a backing paper.  I liked the addition of the vintage bird too (when do I NOT like adding a bird?).  As I didn’t have all my supplies with me, it’s not finished as well as I would like, but it’s ok and a quick and simple little design that ended my day on a satisfied note.

Hope you are having a productive day 🙂

PS I am dedicating this to the late, great Prince, who we tragically lost this week.  RIP x

Wood ‘n’ Bling

On the weekend, disgusted with the majority of my card-making efforts, I decided to give it all away and make some jewellery instead.  Because it is easy.  And requires no brain power or ability to match paper with ribbons and buttons and whatnot. Sure, you have to match beads, but somehow that seems less taxing on my small and somewhat stressed-at-the-moment grey matter.

I had some nice beads made from what I can only assume are polished seeds.  Or, they are wood, at the very least.  I rescued them from some necklaces I bought in the op-shop.  LOVE a good upcycling/recycling.  And these beads are quite unique.

I paired them with some scrapbooking supplies (wooden butterflies and flowers) and some other bits and bobs.  The final pair feature a lovely, blue, glass bead and some vintagey-looking metal flowers.  I don’t love making jewellery, the way I enjoy card-making or other papercraft, but crafting is crafting, and finishing a few pairs of earrings is as good a way to spend an afternoon as any.   They made me feel like I had accomplished something for the day, other than just bad cards.

Hope you are having a productive day, whatever you’re doing 🙂

Clay Tags

Clay Tags

I have been cleaning and tidying all day today due to having yet another rent inspection tomorrow.  I was hoping to be tidied up before today but, with the Christmas festivities and then New Year and my general procrastination, I didn’t get really stuck in until today.  I have to go back to work tomorrow (sigh) as well so it’s kind of a double-whammy of getting-my-act-together-ness.

Whilst tidying up, it is a general habit of mine to get distracted by anything and everything.  Mostly, I get distracted by my own stuff.  I find things I had forgotten about – unfinished projects, supplies I never put away, bits and pieces that are supposed to be part of something but never made it that far.  Today I found, amongst other things, these clay tags I had been making MONTHS ago to put on Christmas presents.

They’re just made from air-dry clay, rolled out fairly thick (to prevent breakage), pierced with a skewer, allowed to dry out and then stamped on with various phrases and sentiments.  Easy-peasy.  Now if only I had remembered to use them 🙂

Worried that I will forget them again, I put one of them on the outside of the basket I have stowed them in – as a visual clue to what’s inside.  There’s not telling if that will actually help me remember…I could stamp “do the dishes” on my forehead and I probably wouldn’t remember to do them, so there’s no guaranteeing this will help me in this instance either.  But here’s hoping, I guess.

So, I am aching and tired and over the whole cleaning scenario.  I even weeded the garden and did ironing today (!) so my body is basically going “what the hell???”  and hurting left, right and centre.  My feet are confused, due to me being on them all day, too.  Being tidy – it’s not good for you.  I think it is actually a health hazard 🙂

Hope you’ve had a productive day x

Noooooooooo! I’m not allowed to get sick!!!

Noooooooooo! I’m not allowed to get sick!!!

Ugh.  I think I am getting a cold.  I hardly ever get them and, when I do, I am quite pathetic.  Sniffly and moany and pathetic.  I think I hate the time they waste.  When you’re sick you can’t do anything constructive and you just want to curl up in a ball and die, loudly with lots of complaining and coughing.  Right now I feel a bit hot in the face and my throat is dry and scratchy.  I have loaded myself up with Vitamin C, Garlic and Horseradish.  I hate bought throat lozenges and will be making myself soup for dinner (capsicum with added horseradish and ginger and garlic – it is possible no one will want to come near me for a few days).  I am drinking lemon and ginger tea and am about to pour a jar of honey down my throat.  Ugh.  I think I am even more pathetic now I am on my own – not that hubby was particularly good at playing nursey but it is always better to have someone around to fetch you tissues and get you hot water bottles and look sympathetic.

However, I shall try not to give in to the lurgy.  I have one more day of my short holiday left and I do not want to waste it.  I have had a few nice days of crafting with my Mum and I don’t want to stop now that I am back home again.  Today we went to a big craft show at the show grounds and had a great time – but I will update you on that next post.  The days before were spent collaging and playing with clay at my Mum’s.  We had been wanting to make some clay ornaments and beads for some time and decided this would be the week we made a commitment to do so.  We soon learned we are lacking in sculpting skills and probably had visions of elaborate finished pieces that were way beyond our actual abilities.  Never mind, we had fun and made a mess which is the important bit 🙂

I made a few round beads that I want to paint once they are dry.  I also made some pendants (again, faces) and a brooch and a little “L.O.V.E” statue that I think is kinda cute.  They all need to be sanded a bit and/or painted and varnished.  Fun!  Time-consuming!  Messy!  But definitely fun.

Little L.O.V.E statue.  (you can’t see the word very clearly here but it is near the bottom.
Speaking of bottoms, she has one.  A butt that is!..but you can’t see that either here)

“Goddess” brooch

“Face” beads and pendant…

Now I have to unpack all my bags (I’ve been staying at Mum’s and I always overpack) and find my house under all the rubble.  I want to be ready to get up early tomorrow, possibly go for a walk if I can get motivated enough and then do a solid day’s crafting as I won’t get to do any for a while due to pesky work commitments (so inconvenient this work business!).  I also plan on eating the fudge I bought at the craft show in a moment of weakness.  I want to get back onto my healthy eating so will have to consume the fudge quickly so as not to ruin my healthy week.  That’s my story and I am sticking to it.  Fudge is good for sore throats, right?

Hope you are having a great weekend, free from lurgies and full of fun and fabulousness! 🙂

Cleaning = Crafting

Cleaning = Crafting

Spent much of Monday (it was a public holiday) trying to clean up my messy house. I have beads and jewellery-making supplies all over the place. It is quite embarrassing. There is no hope for me. I actually start living around the mess which is terrible really. So, anyway, I attempted to tidy up, put things away and sort stuff out on Monday. But we all know (or at least can predict) what actually happened. That’s right, I crafted instead. Whilst tidying. It basically went like this:
1. Vacuum floor.

2. Get distracted by beads. Sit down and play with beads. Drop beads on newly hoovered floor.

3. Vacuum floor again.

4. Collect up newly purchased beads and try to put them in containers and bead boxes.

5. Ooh, aren’t they pretty? I wonder if these blue ones will look nice with these red ones…?

6. Make mess.

7. Get annoyed with self. Make cup of tea, and despair.

8. Get motivated and start sorting through beads and findings and get rid of (i.e. donate to op-shop) beads unwanted.

9. Have second thoughts and rescue beads from op-shop bag.

10. Start making bracelets and earrings. Ignore mess.

And so it went on. HOPELESS is not the word for it. I might as well show you what I made…

I liked these blue glass beads with the simple silver embellishments…might keep them for myself…

Little pearly wonders…

Not sure about this one…the colours aren’t me but I guess someone might like the Autumn tones…

Different coloured stone chips…getting lazy now, only using a few colours!

And again!

I do not know what my obsession is with these skull beads…but they make me smile. Lord knows who would wear them! We don’t celebrate Day of the Dead over here so I might find these ones do not sell…

So there you go. Not exactly anything awe-inspiring but at least I was creative and productive.
My house is still a mess though. I should probably vacuum the floor again too 🙂

Beady TGIF

Beady TGIF

Thank Goodness it is Friday.  It’s been a long week.  My first week back at work after the Christmas holidays.  I was good the first few days and got up at 5:30am to go walking, feeling that this year is gonna be the year that I get back into shape, the year that I make exercise a habit rather than a chore.  Well, that lasted about three days.  On day four, after a particularly late night out with my Mum (it’s her fault – she leads me astray!) I slept in.  Until 7am.  And I leave for work at 7:30am.  Not good.  No early morning walk that day.  Or the next.  Or today either.  On the other days when I missed the morning stroll, I walked in the afternoons after work.  But today, I didn’t even get that far.  As I said, it’s been a long week and the excuses are already setting in.

I have, however, been busy making jewellery for one of the lovely ladies at work.  She knows who she is (Hi! *waves*) and she is my number one customer and cheer squad at the moment.  It is likely, with her around, I will get a big head.  But it is nice to have someone appreciating what you do and making you feel good about yourself.  In the meantime, I feel slightly guilty about taking her money all the time.  I have always had trouble with that part of the equation.  Taking money from people seems…wrong somehow.  Like, who the hell do I think I am, charging for the things I make?!  But, in all honesty, I need the money, so the guilt doesn’t last that long and in the end I am just very grateful I have a modicum of skill and talent which enables me to make some extra cash when I need it.  Which is now.

I was very happy with an anklet I made her (let’s call her “K” for now) and she was too (which is the main thing).  I like working with blues and turquoises and white so when she requested those colours I was more than happy to oblige
(please ignore my dry old lady’s hands):

I also made some other pieces for K (see, I told you…she is basically paying my rent right now) and she has put in a request for others.  Which is fine by me 🙂  I desperately need to buy some new beads and findings because I have gotten very low on everything and I have a bit of an aversion to using the same beads or colour combinations more than a few times.  Thankfully, and perhaps slightly fortuitously, one of the other ladies at work was having a sort out of her old jewellery and so you just know I made a beeline for her desk when I heard.  K had already bolted down the hallway and snaffled quite a few nice pieces, but apparently there had been quite a lot more stuff there.  But I missed out.  But that’s ok. I cannot be on the scrounge all the time.  I did pick up a few bits though that will be taken apart very soon (including some that K decided would be better in my hands and then forwarded to her as finished products ha ha).  I got:

…this anklet which I think looks like a tree or an underwater coral kingdom.  Can’t you just see it as part of a gorgeous mixed-media collage?  I am definitely going to do something with this and I don’t think I will alter it in any way.  It’s nice and worn and a bit rusty.  Lovely for a collage.  I am thinking some embroidery as well…

…this piece has some lovely colours and shapes in it.  Also slightly “ocean-esque” so it may get utilised with the item above (as well as being turned in to lots of other jewellery pieces)…oooh, I am seeing a moon here too…hmmmm…

…some nice pearls.  a bit on the yellow side for my taste but they will get used quite a bit.  It will take me forever to get them off the strands but hey, I have no life so I’m sure I will manage!

…continuing with the sea theme I seem to have going on here, these necklaces look like fishing nets to me.
Albeit very pretty, sparkly ones.  Glass beads in varying shapes and sizes are always welcome.

…more pearly delights.  Love the slightly odd shapes ones (even the rude looking ones to the left!).  Looking forward
to making some nice pieces with these.

So, a good day to come to work.  Even if I was really busy and had so much to do and had a slight panic attack by the end of the day because the work kept piling up and people kept requesting more things.  I never want to look at another journal article as long as I live.  Which is unfortunate as searching for journal articles for people makes up a large proportion of my job.

As well as getting’ beady this week, I have also been working on my 40th birthday invitations.  A classy High Tea for me and several close friends and family members at a lovely restaurant in the city.  I wanted to ask a ridiculous amount of people, but it was getting out of control so, with no concept of how I am going to achieve this, I am going to have several events over the course of a few days, to fit everyone in.  You only have one 40th birthday, right?  Although… I don’t look my age (supposedly) so maybe I could get away with another one…?  My invitations have cupcakes on them (naturally) made out of various scrapbooking papers.  I can’t show you the whole thing because it has my phone numbers, address etc on it.  As much as I do love over-sharing, there is a limit to what parts of my life I will publish on the internet.  So here’s a sample of cakes for you…

So, that’s week one of the new year done and dusted.  Hope your week has been a good one and that the year is shaping up to be everything you hoped it would be (and if it isn’t – give it time…that’s what I am doing…it’s early days yet!).
