Market Doldrums

So, my stall at the Handmade Market was a bit of a downer.  I had worked so hard getting everything ready and staying up late every night making stuff and then it was a big fat fail on the day.  I barely covered the cost of my table hire and parking.  Barely.  And then I spent my awesome $5 profit on a gift for my niece (from one of the other stalls)!

I’ve been really lucky in the past and generally have very successful market days.  Maybe this is because I have them at home and invite people I know.  But I thought if I went to a “proper” market and there were 10 times the amount of people coming in to look, that I would do even better.  So, I’m feeling a bit dejected today – it makes you feel like your stuff is rubbish and not worth anyone’s time.

I am trying to be positive about it.  I met some really nice people – the other stall-holders were lovely and so kind and friendly.  They didn’t do super well either so it wasn’t just me.  It just felt like it was only me, ha ha.  Because I’m a pouty baby 🙂

I was just looking forward to making some money for the Christmas period because I am really short this year.  But it was not to be!  I was genuinely pleased to meet the other artists – they were awesome and I think I could maybe contact some of them for creative advice and brain-picking.  And I had plenty of time to just sit and think about what I could do better, what new things I would like to tackle etc.  Maybe my “art” is too handmade and people prefer things to be more polished, more mass-produced?  Should I look at getting my designs printed up, rather than making individual cards by hand?  Do I need to think about better packaging?  Should I give up altogether and become an accountant?

Some of the other stalls included :

Little Mo & Friends
(This is the lovely lady I bought a little doll from)

Bubba Lentil

Samantha Hughes

So, all in all I am grateful for the experience, even if it didn’t turn out as I had hoped.  I enjoyed making all the cards and other items – it makes me happy to be creative so, if nothing else, I spent many (many!) hours engaged in an activity that relaxes me and helps with anxiety and stress.   Shame that didn’t translate to sales on the day – but it WAS just a day, after all – not the end of the world.  It’s just disappointing.  But I have to chalk it up to “just one of those days” and move on.  And find somewhere to put all these boxes of stuff I had to bring home again with me! 🙂

Have a happy, successful day, everyone x

Earring Bling

Earring Bling

Today I made earrings.  Lots of them.  There is nothing else to say, really.  I stayed in my daggy, around-the-house clothes, drank tea and listened to music.  And made earrings.  The market stall I was going to a part of was suddenly cancelled, so I am planning on having another mini-market at my house.  Which means I need lots of stock.  Hence the earring marathon today.  I made ethnic-inspired ones and bright ones and sparkly ones and ones-I-don’t-like-but-maybe-someone-else-will.  Many of these were made with recycled beads, rescued from old jewellery found in op-shops, or given to me by lovely friends.  Waste not, want not!

I didn’t think these colours would work together but now I kinda like them in this pair…

IMG_8556

I went boho on these ones…

IMG_8525

Copper and green is always peachy keen…or something (I like this colour combination in other words)…

IMG_8527

Pretty in Pink – shells and birdies…

IMG_8555

These elephant, wooden, chunky earrings are, well, chunky, but some people like their bling big, right?

IMG_8560

Cheerful little number, this pair…

IMG_8557

Another bright set (pink not red in this one although it is hard to see in the photo)…

IMG_8535

Always gotta make lots of owls…I already have an order for some of these…

Shell and glass and ceramic beads make this pair…

An oriental pair…

My dining room table is now a state and I haven’t done any ironing or sorted out my lunch for work tomorrow.  My back is aching (ugh – so old!) and I am slightly squinty from having worked in bad light for most of the day.  But I am happy.  A day spent crafting is a good day indeed.

Hope the start of your week has been fulfilling and and a sign of good things to come.  If nothing else, you are one step closer to Friday!  Smile! 🙂

Sometimes creativity is a little bit…elusive.

Sometimes creativity is a little bit…elusive.

On the weekend I tried desperately to have one solid day of crafting when we got back from Boyanup. I have my craft stall coming up and I am nowhere near ready.  I wanted to have a decent amount of cards, as well as jewellery, but so far I am very jewellery-heavy and light on cards.  So I was determined to get some done.  But I am so SLOW when it comes to card-making.  I can’t just slap them together.  I can take hours looking for the right button or embellishment.  So I tried to get these ones done quickly and without fussing too much.  Sometimes creativity and speed do not go hand-in-hand.  Sometimes I fail in both departments.  I was reasonably satisfied with these three but they weren’t up to my usual standard (in my mind anyway).

What do you think?

IMG_8379

Ah, wings and eggs and crowns…I can’t stop doing these!  But I had to colour the wings myself so they would match a bit better – I am running out of butterflies in the right colours!

IMG_8375

…Was not happy with this one at all and kept fiddling with it.  In the end I don’t mind it so much now…it’s ok.

IMG_8377

This one started out promisingly but didn’t go where I wanted it to.  Still, it turned out alright I guess.
Still has wings and a hat though!

I hope creativity and happiness have filled your day today 🙂

Treasured Craft Creations

Treasured Craft Creations

Ah, weekend…is there any sweeter word?  Well, it’s a sweet word now that I don’t have to work on weekends!  Even sweeter when it’s combined with “Craft” and “Show”.  This particular weekend was host to the “Treasured Craft Creations” 3-in–1 market at the Claremont Show Grounds.  It is held several times a year and combines art’n’craft, vintage and antiques & collectables all under the one roof.  You could easily spend a whole day if you were to check out everything on display and go to each different section.  Mum and I (being seasoned TTC regulars) were only interested in the craft area this time so spent just a few (happy) hours wandering around the stalls and buying a few supplies and gifts.  We know which stalls we want to look at and which ones we don’t have a need for (there’s only so many times you can see crocheted peg holders or ironing board covers) but, this time, there were a few new stalls to check out which was a nice change and warranted further inspection and the taking home of business cards and flyers.

Anyway, here’s a selection of goodies on display…

Lots and lots of lavender – pretty purple everywhere! (I don’t remember seeing the
lavender sherbet lollies at the time otherwise I would have bought some!

IMG_2692

Pretty gypsy-inspired jewellery, bags and scarves…

IMG_2682

Love, love, loved this stall (Clay & Clasp) by local artist Lucy.  Such pretty pastel colours and cute designs.  I was so busy trying to get a photo,
I didn’t actually stop and buy something.  But I’m going to the website to see what takes my fancy.  Love the macaroon necklaces – how cute are they?
(sorry, photo is a bit blurry…hard to take a decent pic in jostling crowds!)

IMG_2683

IMG_2678

Lots of lovely soaps – handmade with glorious scents…

IMG_2664

Cool little wooden plaques – like the colour scheme…beachy!

IMG_2669

Adorable bunny pendant – also had dogs, cats, koalas etc.  Super cute!

IMG_2679

Fabric and more fabric in every conceivable colour and pattern…

IMG_2676

Plenty of jewellery for all styles and budgets… (I always look at jewellery for its components…can I make
something else with these beads/charms etc?)

IMG_2677

We had a quick look at all the vintage clothes but we were really in more of a crafty mood so we moved on after a short while…

IMG_2689

Candles everywhere!  Lots of lovely soy-based ones with beautiful fragrances and colours (although I must admit I like the plain cream ones best).
Mum picked up a few
tea lights for her oil burner and little candle holders.

IMG_2691

Loved these little owl pictures – isn’t he sweet, all sequinned and fluffy?

IMG_2690

Something to jazz up your plant pots – Flower Pot Fillies!

IMG_2694

I really must get into the cabochon trend – really like the jewellery and hair clips people are making…

IMG_2695

This was one of the new stalls – “With Love by Bec” – great stuff, very reasonably priced and such pretty things! Lots of stripes
and polka dots and bunting (three of my favourite things!).  I really wanted the polka dot satchel…I ummed and aahed about it too long and
when I went back it was gone 😦

IMG_2696

IMG_2699

IMG_2700

Gorgeous glass beads and steampunk jewellery…

IMG_2697

IMG_2681

Quirky-but-beautiful pottery.  Loved these indigo-hued bowls and dishes. Some of them had little feet and wings!

IMG_2684

I have to admit my ultimate aim at these craft shows is to stock up on card blanks.  Boring I know but necessary.
P & K Craft Supplies always have awesome-quality blanks and I tend to come out with a big bagful of stuff…
I think the owner might think I am stalking him – he sees me at EVERY craft show he does.

IMG_2693

So, what did I buy?  Well…I was reasonably restrained and just got things I knew I would use….

Lots of cards and envelopes, some bookmarks and some glitter
(and some teeny little price tags for when I’m selling my jewellery etc)

IMG_7947

Some beautiful lace – Mum and I went halves on a 12 metre bundle – only $5.00!

IMG_7945

An awesome “seconds” bag of Twiddlybitz pieces.  All this for $5.00!  Most of it was in perfect condition and the bits
that weren’t were so minimally damaged it was barely even visible.  Bargain!

IMG_7942

So that was just a selection of the fine things on display.  My camera died very early on in proceedings so I couldn’t get as many pictures as I would have liked.  I did get fudge though and THAT is important!  Now I have a day at home to spend making cards and maybe tidying up a little bit (ha! unlikely!).  Then it’s back to work tomorrow…boo…but work equals pay packet and pay packet equals craft supplies so, y’know, it’s a necessity…  Happy crafting everyone – hope your weekend has been fun 🙂
