Oh Deer!

Aghhh!  It’s December already!  Which means it’s time to panic about getting Christmas cards made in time!  Every year I do this to myself.  I swear I am going to start making some in June so I have lots ready by the end of the year, but do I ever do that?  No, I do not.  I guess I am just not in the mood in the middle of the year and want to do other things.  And Christmas seems a long way off then too.

But, here we are in December and so the card making frenzy must begin.  I’m not feeling particularly inspired at the moment, and I don’t have a lot of free time, so I wanted to create something that would look cute and effective, but also be fairly quick and simple.  I like reindeers – they make me smile and their overall shape and design is fairly easy to replicate.  You can’t mistake what they’re supposed to be once you have those antlers on!

So, I present to you Christmas card design (for 2017) number one!  These came together really quite quickly, although they are a bit fiddly (gluing on those antlers – aggh! There’s no surface area to put glue without it squishing out the sides so I had to use teeny tiny dabs) and I nearly went insane looking for the right buttons to use for their snozzes.  Turns out I don’t have many red buttons in my collection…

Using the mottled/patterned papers gave the reindeers an almost printed quality, which I kind liked.   It made them more “organic” than if I had just used a plain coloured paper or card.  I just cut the head and ears out from the paper, free hand.  The antlers are actually made with a branch-design paper punch (which is rapidly becoming blunt now – this makes me very sad).  I drew in the little eyes and stamped one of two sentiments underneath.  I actually bought a stamp set on the weekend that had “Oh Deer” on it (as part of a Christmas theme) and I thought that was cute, but I didn’t like the font and size.  So I used another set of stamps (a really nice alphabet set I also bought that day) to make up the words myself.  I like how it turned out 🙂

So, ten cards down and about fifty to go…  I will be making up another design now – I soon get bored of doing the same one over and over.  I should probably try and do something more Australian –  a Christmas koala perhaps?  A platypus pudding?  Hmm, I will have to work on that I think!

Thanks for dropping by – hope your festive season is shaping up to be a happy one 🙂

Fingerprint Reindeers

Fingerprint Reindeers

Earlier in the week, I was ranting about being unorganised for Christmas and panicking about not having time to get any cards made.  I wanted to have handmade cards but needed a super quick design that I could get done in an evening and make multiples at once.  Solution : these adorable little reindeer cards made with fingerprints.

That’s right – fingerprints.  So easy.  A little messy, yes, and don’t do what I did and use archival ink that doesn’t wash off (brown fingertips – so attractive), but really easy and quick and surprisingly effective.  I’d like to be able to take credit for them, but I nicked the idea from cards I had seen on the internet.  If you search “fingerprint reindeer cards”, you’ll get about a bazillion hits.  There’s lots of different designs and ways of making the deers – just choose the one that appeals to you.

It’s basically just two fingerprints for each reindeer – one for the head and slightly larger one for the body (I used my ring finger and index finger) – and then a few details added with marker pens.  SO SIMPLE.  And freaking adorable.  Each little guy has a different expression or attitude.  I added a scarf here and there as well as a heart over their heads.  I made about 25 of them in under two hours.  And then made another 2o the following evening. Let’s remember that I normally can’t even make one card in two hours normally.  So these little gems are a lifesaver for me and will take some of the stress and panic out of my pre-Christmas chaos.  I’m kinda in love with them.

So, give them a try and have lots of fun making a mess.  I certainly did 🙂

Xmas Pimping

Xmas Pimping

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas (or Chris-mess, as I call it in my house).  As I was feeling better in the last couple of days, I decided to get my Xmas butt into gear and do some decoratin’ as my place was looking decidedly un-Christmassy.  I don’t go all out – I don’t have the room for a huge tree or anything fancy – but I do like to have little Christmas vignettes here and there.  Wherever I can fit them.  If that’s on a shelf in the hallway, or a side table in the lounge, then that’s where it’s going.

I like the woodland theme – lots of stags and little trees and natural colours.  A little splash of red but not too much.  I adore my little Christmas scene painting I got last year in an op-shop.  I nearly had a conniption last night because I couldn’t find it (but then it turned up EXACTLY where it was supposed to be, despite me looking there several times throughout the evening, getting more and more anxious as time went on) and I couldn’t get things just right.  But in the end I guess it’s ok.  I’m trying not to be fussy this year.

Hope your festive season has gotten off to a bright and happy start 🙂
